Newark, Del. - The top-seeded Boston University softball team gave up the only run of the game in the first inning, falling to No. 3 Drexel, 1-0, in an elimination round game in the America East Championship on Friday. The loss ends the Terrier's season with a 34-17 record.
Senior pitcher Robyn King, this year's America East Pitcher of the Year, gave up an RBI single to Drexel's Cassie Snow in the bottom of the first that scored Jenn Hulme to make the score 1-0. The run proved to be the game-winner as Drexel pitcher Lori Swanson (19-11), pitching for the second time in two days, threw a complete-game shutout, giving up only four hits while striking out 10 Terrier batters and walking only two.
King (14-3) was charged with the loss, after giving up one earned run. She struck out two and issued two walks.
The Terriers only advanced a base runner past second base only once, when senior second baseman Kerry Herr moved to third on a groundout by King in the first inning. Sophomore shortstop Kristin Knesek and senior catcher Leslie Linnemeyer added doubles for B. U.
Boston University (34-17) gave up the game's deciding run in the first inning for the second time in two days. Robyn Horrick gave up two runs in the first frame of the Terrier's 2-0 loss to Towson on Thursday, then allowed only two hits over the next six innings. After King gave up the deciding run in the first on Friday, Drexel managed only four hits over the final six innings.
