Softball Terriers Finish Off UVM With Another Shutout Sweep

BURLINGTON, Vt. – For the second time in as many days, the Boston University softball team swept a pair of games from the University of Vermont by way of the shutout. The Terriers won game one, 9-0, and took game two, 3-0.
B. U. (19-16, 9-1 America East) won two games over the Catamounts the day before by the scores of 8-0 and 4-0. They outscored UVM, 24-0, in the four-game set.
GAME 1 - Boston University 9, Vermont 0
The opening game was scoreless through five innings, but in the top of the sixth the Terriers came alive and capitalized on its scoring opportunities to explode for seven runs. Sophomore center fielder Julie Henneke (Odessa, Fla.) and freshman right fielder Erin McDonald (Macon, Ill.) started the rally with back-to-back singles and the flood gates opened from there. Sophomore first baseman Jenni Shields (Simi Valley, Calif.) reached base on a Vermont error that allowed both Henneke and McDonald to score. Sophomore designated player DeKenya Williams (San Diego, Calif.) and freshman third baseman Josey Mendez (Miami, Fla.) each contributed with RBI singles, before junior left fielder Abbey Pauley (Spring, Texas) closed out the rally with a triple to drive in B.U.’s final two runs of the inning.
The Terriers added two more in the top of the seventh as Shields again reached base on an error to score McDonald and a Mendez sacrifice fly allowed Shields to score from third to give B. U. a 9-0 win.
Senior Tiffany Finateri (Las Vegas, Nev.) (5-4) scattered six hits and struck out seven batters to earn the win. Vermont’s Angie Totaro (4-9) struck out seven batters in a complete game effort. McDonald and Williams each went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Shields had three RBI and two runs scored, despite going 0-for-4 from the plate.
GAME 2 - Boston University 3, Vermont 0
In game two, Williams hit a two-run homer, her first of the season, to centerfield in the top of the second inning to lead B. U.to the 3-0 victory. Sophomore shortstop Jamie Haas (Houston, Texas) added an RBI single in the fifth inning to provide the final 3-0 margin.
Shields went 3-for-3 in game two and scored one run. McDonald (7-6) held Vermont to just three hits and struck out six batters in the complete-game win. Since losing her first six decisions this season, McDonald has gone 7-0. Kara Massey (4-10) tossed a complete game for Vermont.
The Terriers, atop the America East standings with a 9-1 record, return to action with a doubleheader against the University of Maine on Wednesday, April 23. Start time at the B. U. Softball Field is 3 p.m.
