Terriers Take Two Non-Conference Wins From Rhode Island

BOSTON - Junior outfielder Abbey Pauley (Spring, Texas) went 4-for-6 with five runs scored and three runs batted in, and sophomore pitcher Julie Henneke struck out a season-high 14 Rhode Island batters, as the Boston University softball team swept the Rams, 5-0 and 7-1, at the B. U. Softball Field on Wednesday, April 30.
Boston University improved its overall record to 27-17, while Rhode Island fell to 17-22. B. U. has now won 21 of the 22 games all-time between the two schools.
GAME ONE - Boston University 5, Rhode Island 0
In a game that was hitless through the first three innings, the Terriers broke into the scoring column with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore shortstop Jamie Haas (Houston, Texas) scored on a wild pitch from URI's Jenna Thurston, spotting B. U. a 1-0 lead. Freshman first baseman Liz Alley (Aurora, Colo.) then connected on a two-run double to center to increase the Terriers' advantage to 3-0.
B. U. would add a run in the fourth frame, as freshman right fielder Erin McDonald (Macon, Ill.) singled home Pauley to make it 4-0. Pauley singled through the right side to score senior left fielder Tiffany Finateri (Las Vegas, Nev.) in the sixth to provide the final 5-0 margin.
Henneke (11-5) struck out the side in the first inning on her way to a season-high 14 strikeouts. She went the distance, giving up only three hits and three walks. Thurston had 10 strikeouts and six walks, giving up five earned runs on eight hits.
Pauley and McDonald each had two hits for B. U. Pauley also had two walks. Alley was 1-for-2 with two RBI. Rhode Island was led by Kristin Havdoglous, who was 2-for-2 with a walk.
GAME TWO - Boston University 7, Rhode Island 1
The Rams got off to a good start, touching B. U. starting pitcher Erin McDonald for a run on a triple by Nicole Haywood that scored Havdoglous to give the Rams a short-lived 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, B. U. struck for a pair of runs thanks to RBI singles by Henneke and McDonald. The Terriers broke a 2-1 game open in the fifth, as McDonald drove in a Henneke and Pauley to make the score 4-1. In the sixth, Pauley reached on a fielder's choice that scored Haas and Finateri to increase the Terrier lead to 6-1. Pauley later scored on a passed ball to make the score 7-1.
The top of the Terriers' order went a combined 5-for-12 with three RBI and six runs score. Pauley finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored, and Henneke was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
McDonald (11-6) won her 11th consecutive start, giving up one earned run on four hits. She struck out six Rams' batters while walking one. After giving up a pair of hits in the first, she gave up only two more in the remainder of the game. At the plate, McDonald finished 2-for-2 with three RBI.
B. U. plays a non-conference game at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass. on Thursday, May 1 at 5 p.m.
