AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts softball team got a sacrifice fly by Brandi Cross in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Boston University, 3-2, at the UMass Softball Complex on Thursday, May 1.
The Minutewomen (29-13) have now won 51 consecutive games at home.
Emily Robustelli led off the seventh inning with a double and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Cross then hit a 1-0 pitch to mid-range right field to drive in Robustelli with the winning run.
The Terriers threatened to take the lead in the top of the seventh inning, but the Minutewomen turned a 1-2-3 double-play to get out of the jam.
UMass took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Cross delivered a one-out RBI single. B. U. (27-18, 15-1 America East) tied the game in the top of the fourth on a home run by sophomore center fielder Julie Henneke (Odessa, Fla.). It was Henneke's first home run of the season.
UMass's KJ Kelley answered with a solo home run over the left-center field fence to give the Minutewomen a 2-1 edge.
The Terriers scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at two.
B. U. wraps up its regular season with a four-game America East series against the University at Albany on Saturday and Sunday, May 3-4. Barring rain, Saturday's Alumni Day action gets started at 2 p.m. Sunday's Senior Day festivities start at 12 p.m.
