Terrier Softball Trio Named NFCA All-America Scholar Athletes
November 15, 2004 | Softball
BOSTON - Three Boston University softball student-athletes - seniors Jamie Haas (Houston, Texas) and Christy King (Albuquerque, N.M.) and sophomore Krysta Peplowski (Albany, N.Y.) were recognized for their ability off the playing field, as the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) named them All-America Scholar Athletes.
All three earned a spot on the America East Winter/Spring Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll last year, an award that recognizes those student-athletes who achieve a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.
Haas, an America East All-Conference First Team selection for the third time, also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District I Softball Second Team honors last year. Her second academic award wrapped up a spectacular 2003-04 season for Haas. She was also named to the Northeast Region All-Region First Team by the NFCA. Additionally, she was named to America East's All-Championship Team. Haas has earned the America East Academic Honor Roll award the last two years.
Haas, a shortstop, led the Terriers in nearly all of the major offensive categories during her junior season. She paced the Terriers in batting (.355), hits (63), and steals (18). Her .355 career batting average is second all-time at B.U.
It's the second NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete award for King, who also received the award as a freshman in 2002. She has earned the conference's academic honor in each of her three years at B.U. In high school, she was the recipient of the Alumni Association Award for Academic and Athletic Excellence, and was cum laude as a junior and senior while at Albuquerque Academy.
King batted .138 for the Terriers, with most of her 53 starts coming at third base. She was instrumental in the Terriers' late-season charge into the America East Softball Championship and their run into the title game.
Peplowski earned a spot on the Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll for the first time. She started 28 games at season base early in the season.
Last season, 13 Terrier softball players earned a spot on the league's Academic Honor Roll.
Last year, the Terriers finish 26-32, but made a late-season run in the America East Championship, advancing to the title game by staving off elimination four times, only to fall to the University of Maine, 2-1, in the championship game.
In 2005, Shawn Rychcik takes over as the Terriers head coach after two seasons as an assistant coach.
