Terrier Softball Splits At Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. - Freshman pitcher Ashlee Freeman (Northridge, Calif. / Oaks Christian) pitched a five-hit shutout, leading the B.U. softball team to a 1-0 win at Princeton University in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, March 27. The Tigers won the second game, 7-5.
B. U.'s record goes to 11-18 overall, while Princeton went to 9-10 after the split.
GAME ONE - Boston University 1, Princeton 0
The Terriers scored the only run of the game - and got their only three hits of the game - in the top of the seventh inning. Junior shortstop Jamie Haas (Houston, Texas / Klein) singled to third and junior right fielder DeKenya Williams (San Diego, Calif. / Mt. Carmel) and sophomore designated player Erin McDonald (Macon, Ill. / Mt. Zion) each hit deep outfield singles. McDonald's scored sophomore pinch runner Tara Hodge (Los Gatos, Calif. / Los Gatos) to give the Terriers all the offense they would need.
Princeton scattered five hits, but left all five runners on base, including two in both the second and sixth innings.
Freeman (7-9) went the distance for the 15th time this season. She struck out two Tiger batters and did not allow a walk. Princeton's Melissa Finley (1-4) got the loss despite allowing only three hits and striking out nine while giving up no walks.
GAME TWO - Princeton 7, Boston University 5
Princeton's Ty Ries hit a three-run homer in the first inning, part of a four-run frame that put the Tigers up to stay. Finley doubled in two more in the second inning as the home team built a 7-0 lead after two.
B.U. got right back in the game in the third inning after loading the bases thanks to three walks by Tigers' pitcher Amelia Runyon. Sophomore Liz Alley (Aurora, Colo. / Eaglecrest) hit her first career grand slam home run to cut the lead to 7-4.
The Terriers added a single run in the fifth inning to make the score 7-5.
Princeton pounded out 17 hits, 10 of which coming while B.U. freshman starting pitcher Brittany Detwiler (Souderton, Pa. / Souderton Area). Detwiler gave up the 10 hits and seven earned runs in 1.1 innings. Williams replaced her and pitched an effective 3.0 innings, giving up five hits.
B.U. returns to action on Sunday, March 28 when they play a pair at Boston College starting at 1 p.m.
