UConn Downs Terriers Despite Six-Run Rally
April 20, 2004 | Softball
STORRS, Conn. - Freshman second baseman Chiya Louie (Seattle, Wash.) hit a three-run homer to spark a six-run rally in the final two innings, but it wasn't enough as the University of Connecticut scored five in the sixth to take a 10-6 softball win over the Terriers in Storrs, Conn. on Tuesday, April 20.
B.U. (17-24, 5-1 America East) fell for the second game in a row. UConn improved to 19-18.
UConn's Suzy de Bary knocked one of three Huskies' home runs over the fence to bring three runs home as part of a five-run sixth inning for the Huskies.
UConn took a 5-0 lead before the Terriers scored their first run. Jen Ward’s two-run homer in the fourth inning put the Huskies up 5-0.
Louie's home run, her eighth of the season, scored sophomore pinch runner Emily Varga (Clinton, Conn.) and senior center fielder Abbey Pauley (Spring, Texas) to cap a three-run sixth inning that cut the Huskies' lead to 5-3.
The Huskies then answered with five runs to put the game seemingly out of reach. The run included de Bary’s three-run homer, a sacrifice fly by Campen, an a run by Stephanie DiBiase that scored on an error.
The top of the seventh inning saw B.U. rally once again, taking advantage of UConn errors by scoring twice on one error and a third run on a wild pitch.
Junior pitcher DeKenya Williams (San Diego, Calif.) recorded the loss for the Terriers (2-5). Four of the five runs she allowed were earned.
Krista Michalczyk (3-1) took the win in the circle for UConn, striking out three batters.
The Terriers return to America East play when they host a doublehaeder against the University of Vermont at the B.U. Softball Field on Wednesday, April 21 at 2 p.m.
