Softball Terriers Split With Vermont

GAME ONE - Vermont 1, Boston University 0
GAME TWO - Boston University 5, Vermont 2
BOSTON - The University of Vermont softball team earned its first win over Boston University since 1996 with a 1-0 victory in the opening game of the doubleheader at the B.U. Softball Field on Wednesday, April 21. The Terriers came back to win the nightcap, 5-2.
GAME ONE - Vermont 1, Boston University 0
It was a pitcher's duel in game one, as the two pitchers combined to scatter seven hits. Vermont's Kara Massey allowed only four hits in the complete game shutout. Freshman Ashlee Freeman (Northridge, Calif.) gave up only three hits in taking the loss. She struck out six while walking only one.
Massey walked seven B.U. batters, but the Terriers couldn't capitalize, leaving 12 runners on base.
Vermont scored the lone run of the game in the top of the fourth inning, when Heidi Gebo led off with a double and Kate DeForge followed with an RBI triple to score Gebo.
The win snapped a 23-game losing streak to the Terriers.
GAME TWO - Boston University 5, Vermont 2
Junior left fielder DeKenya Williams (San Diego, Calif.) hit two triples and scored on both after UVM wild pitches. Junior short stop Jamie Haas (Houston, Texas) added another run-scoring triple, scoring senior center fielder Abbey Pauley (Spring, Texas) as the Terriers came from behind in the 5-2 win.
Vermont held a 2-0 lead through three innings, but B.U. scored five runs in the final three innings, including three in the bottom of the fifth to earn the victory.
Freshman Brittany Detwiler (Souderton, Pa.) gave up only four hits and a pair of earned runs in the win. She also had an RBI single to score the final B.U. run of the game.
Freeman went 3-for-3 at the plate while serving as the team's designated player.
The Terriers travel to Stony Brook University on April 24-25 for a three-game series against the Seawolves. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 12 noon.
