Terriers Remain Undefeated With Win Over Oakland, 3-0
September 10, 2004 | Women's Soccer
ANN ARBOR, MI-The Terrier women's soccer team continued its undefeated ways with a 3-0 win over Oakland University on Friday, September 10th, in the opening match of the Michigan Classic hosted by the University of Michigan.
For the Terriers, who were ranked 22nd in the nation this week, the win improved their record to 4-0, as they are off to their best start since 1996. That season, the Terriers won their first six matches en route to an overall record of 14-4-0.
Against Oakland, the Terriers got goals from junior Meghann Cook (Melrose, MA) along with sophomores Lauren Erwin (Orange, CT) and Paula Moniz (Bridgewater, MA), while sophomore Stephanie Dreyer (New Rochelle, NY) and freshman Christina Reuter (Madison, WI) combined for the team's second shutout of the season.
Erwin scored the only goal the Terriers would need when she took a pass from junior Susan Marschall (Baton Rouge, LA) and beat Oakland keeper Jessica Howard at the 39:07 mark.
Cook continued her torrid scoring pace with her third goal in four games when she picked up a rebound and fired the ball into the empty net at 57:04. Junior Brooke Bingham (Duxbury, MA) took the initial shot and was credited with the assist. After being held scoreless by Boston College in the first match of the season, Cook now has a goal in each of her last three matches. She also has two assists for a team-leading eight points this season.
Moniz added an insurance goal at 70:38 when she picked up a loose ball that Howard had punched out. Moniz delivered her shot to the upper right corner of the goal to account for the Terriers' final goal of the afternoon.
In the meantime, Dreyer played the first half and earned the win despite not having any saves. As has been the case in the first four games this season, Reuter came off the bench to play the second half, and she chipped in with two saves.
The Terriers dominated play, outshooting Oakland, 30-5. The margin was 13-1 in the first half and 17-4 in the second half. B.U. also had a decided advantage in corner kicks, 9-0.
The Terriers return to action on Sunday when they play the host Wolverines at 2:00 p.m.
