Women's Soccer Battles Dartmouth to Chilly Draw
October 12, 2005 | Women's Soccer
BOSTON ??? The Terriers scored a late goal to even the match and were able to withstand two Big Green scoring chances in over time as the Boston University women???s soccer team tied Dartmouth College 1-1 Wednesday afternoon at Nickerson Field. The game was played in the chilliest conditions of the season, with frequent gusts of wind, temperatures in the high 40s and intermittent rain. BU has now lost just once in its last 11 games and is 8-4-4 on the season. It was the Terriers??? final nonconference game of 2005. Dartmouth is 7-3-1.
Dartmouth jumped on the board early ??? in the seventh minute ??? when Melissa Matulich hit a cross from the right side to just outside the penalty box. Jennie Tonneson gathered in the feed and fired a high hard shot that beat Terrier keeper Christian Reuter (Madison, Wisc.) and gave the Big Green a 1-0 lead.
BU had a chance to even the match in the opening 45 minutes when Melissa Shulman (Huntington, N.Y.) hammered a shot that hit the crossbar. The ball bounced straight down but was cleared by the Big Green defense, and DC took its one-goal lead into the halftime locker room.
The Terriers finally broke through in the 70th minute. Shulman broke free on the right wing and fired a pass to a streaking Meghann Cook (Melrose, Mass.), Cook one-timed the ball and booted home the tying goal to the far post. Cook has now scored a point in four straight games for BU and leads the team with 21 points. The goal was her eighth of the season and the 27th of her career, two behind Shulman for second place all-time.
Neither team could score the rest of regulation, and Dartmouth had two great chances by Emily Tracy in overtime, but the game ended in a draw. Dartmouth outshot the Terriers 15-9, while BU had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
BU returns to America East play this weekend when the Terriers take on New Hampshire in Durham, N.H. Game time is 1 p.m. on Sunday.
