Haas, Freeman Named America East Player, Pitcher Of The Week
April 25, 2005 | Softball
BOSTON - Senior Jamie Haas (Houston, Texas) was named America East's Player of the Week for the second straight week and sophomore Ashlee Freeman (Northridge, Calif.) was selected as the conference's Pitcher of the Week after leading the Terriers to a 4-0 record last week.
Haas shares the weekly honor with Stony Brook's Hayley Durham. It is Haas's third Player of the Week honor this season and her second award in as many weeks. It is Freeman's first weekly pitching honor this season. She earned the award twice as a freshman last year.
B.U. won each of its four games last week, twice scoring two seventh-inning runs to cap come-from-behind victories at Boston College (4-2) on April 20 and vs. Dartmouth (7-6) on April 21. The Terriers also downed Dartmouth, 1-0, and defeated Vermont, 7-1, on April 24. The Terriers have six games in a row and eight of nine. Their current six-game winning streak is their longest since the 2003 season.
During the week, Haas led the team in batting (.462), runs (4), hits (6), and on-base percentage (.533). In the BC win, she went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. She sparked the Terriers' two-run seventh inning with an infield single, scoring the first of the two runs. In the 1-0 win over Dartmouth, she had the game-winning RBI, beating the throw to first on a bunt attempt, allowing the go-ahead run to score from third. She also had a two-run double in the 7-1 win over Vermont.
Freeman went 3-0 last week with a 1.03 earned run average. In the 1-0 win over Dartmouth, she came within one out of recording her first career no-hitter, allowing the Big Green only one single in the shutout win. She was just as sharp in the 7-1 win at Vermont, giving up only four hits and one run in a complete-game effort. She pitched 6.2 innings in the 4-2 win at BC, allowing only six hits and two runs. In 20.1 innings of work during the week, she allowed only 11 hits and three earned runs. Opposing batters hit only .157 against her.
The Terriers wrap up their three-game series at Vermont with a doubleheader on Monday, then begin a three-game set against the University of Maine on Wednesday, April 27 at 2:30 p.m.
