BOSTON - Rewarded for notching four points in two games, Boston University men’s ice hockey freshman forward Chris Higgins (Lynnfield, Mass.) was today named the Hockey East Superskills Hockey Rookie of the Week. It was the first such honor for Higgins and the second-consecutive week that the award has been bestowed upon a BU player, as Brandon Yip (Maple Ridge, B.C.) was the league’s top newcomer last week.
On Friday, Higgins notched an assist in the Terriers’ 5-3 victory at Merrimack, then followed it up with an unassisted goal and two helpers in BU’s 5-0 shutout of the Warriors on Saturday to complete the weekend and season sweep. The three-point effort also marked the first multiple-point game of his career.
Four other Terriers were also recognized for their efforts versus Merrimack last week, as juniors John Curry (Shorewood, Minn.) and Kenny Roche (South Boston, Mass.), along with sophomore Pete MacArthur (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Yip each made their way onto the Honor Roll.
Curry earned the back-to-back league wins over the Warriors, making a total of 23 saves in four periods of play. Meanwhile, Roche netted his first career hat trick and assisted on the game-winner in Friday’s win and MacArthur scored back-to-back game-winners in the weekend sweep, while also setting up two power-play goals. Finally, Yip set up five of 10 BU goals, while only playing half of the second game.
The Terriers return to action at 7:00 p.m. on Friday at Boston College, which can be viewed live on NESN.
