CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Freshman Ben Merrill scored two goals, including a shorthanded tally, and sophomore Mikhail Yegorov made 28 saves to help lead the Boston University men's ice hockey team to a 5-1 win over No. 10/11 Boston College on Saturday night at Conte Forum.
Merrill was one of four Terriers with multi-point efforts as BU (16-15-2, 12-11-0 HE) completed a weekend sweep of BC (19-12-1, 13-9-0 HE). Juniors Gavin McCarthy and Jack Harvey each had one goal and one assist while sophomore Cole Hutson recorded two helpers. Sophomore Cole Eiserman notched his team-leading 15th goal of the season. Yegorov was the No. 1 star for the second straight night, as he made several spectacular stops as part of his 28-save performance. He helped BU go 3-for-3 on the penalty kill in addition to shorthanded goals by Merrill and Harvey.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Merrill's shorthanded goal got the Terriers on the board first at 12:14 of the opening period. McCarthy recovered the puck and skated behind his net before sending the puck towards the BC end of the ice. The puck took a fortunate bounce off an Eagle defender and right to the stick of Merrill, who converted the breakaway chance for his fifth goal of the campaign.
- Oskar Jellvik equalized at 17:21 of the first, but McCarthy restored the Terriers' advantage just 2:40 into the second stanza. Lawrence won an offensive-zone draw back to Hutson, who skated to the right point. Despite a deflection, Hutson's pass landed on McCarthy's tape at the bottom of the left circle and the captain made no mistake for his third goal of the season.
- Yegorov denied James Hagens on a breakaway bid midway through the second to keep the Terriers up by one.
- Harvey gave the Terriers a two-goal lead just 1:27 into the third. Celebrini won a battle at his own blue line and chipped the puck ahead to Harvey, who skated up the right wing with Bednarik driving to the net. Harvey dropped the puck back for a trailing Hutson, who then dangled around one defender before finding a wide-open Harvey at the bottom of the right circle for the shorthanded strike.
- Yegorov denied Hagens again on a grade-A chance, this time on a shorthanded 2-on-1 for the Eagles, to keep BU in front with less than six minutes to play in regulation.
- Merrill provided even more insurance with 4:57 on the clock. Trethewey's outlet pass went right to Merrill in the neutral zone. Merrill then skated in alone with three Eagles in their own zone, got around his nearest defender and ripped home a shot past Louka Cloutier (15 saves).
- BC pulled Cloutier in favor of an extra attacker with 4:29 to play and Eiserman eventually iced the game with an empty-netter at 18:47 of the third.
- Yegorov stopped 52 of 54 shots over the weekend and allowed just one even-strength goal.
- Harvey leads Hockey East and is tied for second in the NCAA with three shorthanded goals.
- He has lit the lamp in three straight games.
- Eiserman has scored a goal in three straight games and five of his last six appearances.
- Hutson has totaled five points (1g, 4a) during the Terriers' three-game win streak.
- He has recorded 20 assists in each of his two seasons with the Terriers and ended the night with 21 helpers.
- Merrill became the fifth Terrier to record a shorthanded goal this season.
- Bednarik has secured an assist in three straight contests.
- Lawrence and Trethewey each collected an assist in each win this weekend.
- BU will close out the regular season on Saturday, March 7, when the Terriers travel to UMass Lowell.
- Puck drop is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
