BOSTON – The Boston University softball team will take a break from conference action to travel to Boston College for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. The Terriers enter the contest with a 30-11 overall record, while the Eagles stand at 11-26. The all-time series has been tightly contested with BC holding the 14-12 edge in a rivalry that dates back 19 years.
The Eagles swept the first three sets in 1988, 1990 and 1991. The Terriers earned their first win against the Eagles in 1992 in a 4-3 decision. Two years later BU swept its cross-town rival in three games, which included a 16-0 shutout in the season opener. The two Boston teams played consistently throughout the nineties and have met in every season since 2003. Over the past three years BC has taken three out of five meetings, including last year’s 7-4 victory.
The Eagles recently snapped an 11-game losing streak in conference games with a 9-1 win over Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia Tech on April 29. Their other two conference wins came over Virginia. BC is led by senior pitcher Britney Thompson, who is currently batting .418 with 11 home runs and 27 RBI. Thompson is second in the ACC in batting average. Freshman Taylor Peyton’s 3.95 ERA is a team-best, while Thompson’s seven wins leads the Eagles.
The Terriers have made a name for themselves this season with their prolific scoring ranking 11th in the nation and first in America East with 6.0 runs per game. They are also productive long ball hitters averaging 1.27 home runs per game, good for ninth nationally. Ten of the Terriers’ 12 batters have hit at least one homer this season. BU’s .514 slugging percentage ranks ninth nationally.
Sophomore catcher Christy Leath owns a .381 batting average, ranking second in the conference and first on the team. Senior Chiya Louie and freshman Rachel Hebert lead the team in runs batted in with 37 apiece. After knocking two over the fence in the rubber match at Hartford, Louie has recorded a team-high 11 homers this season, a single-season career high. The Seattle, Wash., native is two dingers away from tying Liz Alley’s career home run record.
On the mound, freshman Megan Currier has amassed 17 wins and leads the squad with a 2.01 ERA. Currier needs just one win to tie teammate Cassidi Hardy and Ashlee Freeman’s freshman win record.
