Softball Completes Sweep of Vermont with 14-1 Victory

BURLINGTON, Vt. – One day after claiming the America East regular-season crown, the Boston University softball team (34-12, 17-3 America East) completed its three-game sweep of Vermont (12-29, 5-16 AE) with a 14-1 victory in five innings. Senior Chiya Louie broke the school record for career home runs in the second inning with a two-run blast. Louie drove in three runs in the game, while sophomore Melissa Dubay was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Senior Brittany Detwiler pitched a complete game to earn her eighth win of the season.
Five Terriers recorded multiple hits with Dubay pacing the offense with two hits, two runs and three RBI. Sophomore Brooke Hudson was 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs and two RBI and senior Brandi Shields was also 2-for-3. In addition, sophomores Christy Leath and Nora Militz connected on two hits. The Terriers knocked four over the fence, driving in five runs off the long ball.
Detwiler struck out five batters, allowed one unearned run, issued five walks and scattered three hits over five innings.
After going up by one in the first the Terriers had an offensive outburst in the second inning, pushing eight runs across the plate. Militz got things going when she knocked a two-run homer run out to center field. Three at-bats later Hudson tripled to center field to plate Shields and freshman Rachel Moeller. Then the team’s two home run leaders, Louie and freshman Rachel Hebert, recorded matching two-run homers to up the Terriers’ lead to nine.
The Terriers added five runs in the third on five hits. Leath and Hebert drove in runs followed by Dubay’s three-run blast, which capped off the scoring for BU.
Vermont spoiled Detwiler’s shutout in the bottom of the third on a throwing error which brought home the Catamounts lone run.
The Terriers’ offense was prolific over the weekend outscoring the Catamounts 30-4 in three games, including six home runs and 28 RBI. Leath, Louie, Shields and Dubay each recorded five hits.
BU’s pitching staff of Detwiler and freshman Megan Currier combined for a 1.24 ERA, allowing just three earned runs in three games.
