HOUSTON, Texas - Back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning proved costly for the Boston University softball team as it fell, 2-1, to Kansas on Saturday evening on the second day of the Marriott Houston Classic. Junior Shayne Lotito scored the Terriers' lone run, while sophomore pitcher Cassidi Hardy was charged with the loss. BU falls to 1-3 on the season.
Lotito led on the offensive front, going 2-for-3 with one run and one stolen base. Senior Tyler Benson and freshman April Setterlund recorded the other two Terrier hits.
Lotito broke a scoreless deadlock in the fourth inning after reaching base on a bunt single. Benson was credited with the RBI when Kansas' shortstop committed a throwing error that put Benson on second and brought home Lotito.
Hardy pitched five scoreless innings, before Kansas' Val Chapple's two-run homer put the Jayhawks up by one. In a complete-game effort, Hardy struck out one batter, allowed five hits and two earned runs.
BU will face Centenary at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24 in the final day of the tourney hosted by No. 16 Houston.
