Box Score | Leadership Prepares Softball for Another Strong Season
HOUSTON, Texas -
In its final game of the Marriott Houston Classic, the Boston University softball team fell, 7-4, to Centenary on Sunday morning in Houston, Texas. Junior Shayne Lotito, sophomore Rachel Hebert and freshman April Setterlund all recorded multiple hits, but the Terriers were unable to overcome a seven-run third inning by Centenary. BU falls to 1-4 on the young season and will now head to Missouri for the Tiger Invitational.
Lotito, Hebert and Setterlund were 2-for-4 on the day, respectively, while Dubay also earned an RBI. Sophomore Cassidi Hardy pitched 2.1 innings and was charged with the loss, allowing five earned runs and striking out three batters, while freshman Kelley Engman pitched the final 3.2 innings with two strikeouts and one earned run.
BU took an early lead with a run in the second frame when Setterlund's double to left center plated junior Brooke Hudson, who had reached on a double to the same spot. Centenary came roaring back in the third on five hits. Three consecutive hits loaded the bases and two at bats later a single drove two runs home. A wild pitch plated the third run and an error moved the score to 4-1. Centenary rounded out its scoring with a three-run homer before pitcher Kelley Engman recorded the final two outs of the inning.
BU began its rally in the top of the fifth when junior Christy Leath tripled and scored on the next at bat when Hebert singled to second base. The Terriers continued their comeback in the seventh on two runs by Setterlund and Lotito, but the rally fell short as Centenary's Lauren Highsmith recorded the final two outs of the game.
BU will travel to Columbia, Mo., for the Tiger Invite to face Missouri and South Dakota State from Feb. 29-March 2.
