ORONO, Maine - Despite a grand slam from sophomore Rachel Hebert, the Boston University softball team could not stave off a late rally by Maine as the Black Bears came back to defeat the Terriers by a 13-9 margin on Wednesday afternoon at Mike Kessock Field. Hebert drove in six runs during the contest, tying a single-game school record, and was 3-for-4 in the batter's box. BU falls to 26-16 overall and 12-3 in the America East, while Maine improves to 9-35 overall and 8-7 in the conference.
A string of nine runs capped off the sixth inning, as the Black Bears overcame a six-run deficit to earn their eighth league contest of the season. Hebert led the Terriers' offense with her first career grand slam in the third frame that gave BU the initial lead. Freshman April Setterlund went 3-for-4, and junior Shayne Lotito collected two hits in four at-bats. Sophomore Megan Currier (8-7) was charged with the loss.
Hebert broke a 1-1 deadlock in the third inning with a two-out grand slam that gave BU a commanding 5-1 advantage. In the fifth frame, the sophomore second baseman tacked on another run with an RBI single through the left side, and junior Nora Militz made it 7-1, driving in classmate Melissa Dubay.
In the bottom half of the frame; however, the Black Bears began to mount their rally with a three-run long ball that cut the deficit to 7-4.
In the top of the sixth, Hebert concluded her prolific afternoon with an RBI single up the middle and junior Christy Leath put one on the board with a sacrifice fly out to center field. Maine responded by reclaiming the lead, scoring nine runs on nine hits before retiring all three Terrier batters in the top of the seventh to secure the come-from-behind victory.
BU will make the short trek to Harvard on Thursday for a 4:00 p.m. start.
