BOSTON - The Boston University softball team took two from Maine (5-31 overall, 5-3 AE) on Wednesday afternoon at BU Softball Field to improve to 20-12 overall and 7-1 in America East action. The Terriers claimed a 5-0 shutout in the first game and followed up with an 8-3 victory in game two, as they remain undefeated at home this season. Freshman April Setterlund was an impressive 5-for-8 with two RBI on the afternoon, while junior Brooke Hudson went 3-for-6 with two RBI. BU will host Big East foe UConn on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
Junior Melissa Dubay and senior Tyler Benson both hit .500 through both games and junior Christy Leath contributed with two RBI. The pitching staff was also solid as sophomores Cassidi Hardy and Megan Currier went the distance in their respective games. Hardy pitched a one-hit game, issuing one walk and striking out six batters to improve to 9-4 in the circle, while Currier (7-4) allowed three runs on three hits with six strikeouts.
The Terriers pounded out 13 hits in the first game - matching a season high - including 4-for-4 performances from Dubay and Setterlund, who also had two stolen bases. Benson went 2-for-3 in the batter's box and four different Terriers drove in runs.
Leath drove in Setterlund with a double to center field and then scored two at-bats later when she stole home in the first inning to take the early 2-0 advantage. In the second frame, the Terriers had a golden opportunity, loading the bases with one out; however, Maine's Jenna Balent recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning and get out of the jam. In the third, Hudson tacked on one more with an RBI double to right center.
Dubay drove in a run on a single to right field with the bases loaded in the fourth and sophomore Rachel Hebert followed up with an RBI single to up the Terriers' lead to five runs. BU again loaded the bases in the fifth; however, after a pitching change Maine hurler Cayleigh Montano forced two outs - including a 10-pitch at-bat for Hudson - to end the frame.
In game two, Maine struck first with a two-run dinger to right field; however, Hudson cut the deficit in half with a stand-up double to center field that plated Hebert. A costly error at third base allowed the Terriers to claim the lead, 3-2, as Hudson and Moeller took advantage of the miscue and scored.
Strong defense helped the Terriers get out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the third and BU stretched the lead to four runs in the fourth, beginning with Setterlund's triple to center field that brought home freshman Melanie Delgado and Benson and ending with Lotito's RBI double to center field. Maine made one last attempt to rally in the top of seventh when a solo shot over the center field fence put the score at 8-3 and two more hits put runners on base, but Currier forced a ground out to put the game away.
BU will host the Huskies at BU Softball Field on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
