Game 1 | Game 2
NEW YORK, N.Y. - Junior Cassidi Hardy became just the third Boston University softball pitcher to throw two no-hitters in one season on Saturday afternoon as she struck out seven Columbia (7-12) batters en route to her seventh win of the season. The Terriers (15-6) won the first game by a 2-0 margin and the second was an 11-7 victory for BU. Senior Melissa Dubay had a standout afternoon with six RBI through two games and two home runs in the second game.
Hardy joins an elite group of two other BU hurlers that have thrown at least two no-hitters in one season and the first since the 1994 season. Audrey West ('96) threw four perfect games in 1994, the year she won her first AE Pitcher of the Year award, and Shannon Downey ('93) threw a no-hitter and a perfect game in 1993, also an AE Pitcher of the Year in that campaign. Hardy's first career no-hitter came just two weeks ago when she shut down Western Michigan on March 6 in a 4-0 victory.
Dubay was outstanding in the batter's box on Saturday with three hits and six RBI through two games. In the first contest she provided the game-winning run with a single up the middle and in game two she recorded two homers in an 11-run outburst for the Terriers.
In game one, seniors Christy Leath and Dubay each drove in runs in the Terriers' first game at Columbia, while freshman Erica Casacci went 2-for-2 in the batter's box. Hardy issued just four walks and struck out seven of the 27 batters she faced.
Dubay provided the game-winning run in the third frame as her single up the middle plated Leath and the senior catcher later returned the favor driving in classmate Brooke Hudson on an RBI single - giving the Terriers a 2-0 run cushion with a half of an inning remaining in the contest. After one walk got on base, Hardy forced two pop ups and struck out one to complete the victory.
The second game was more focused on hitting as the teams combined to score 18 runs. Dubay was not the only Terrier to go deep as sophomore April Setterlund hit one over the fence in the second inning. BU got things going in the first inning with Dubay's two-run blast as the squad jumped out to an early lead - one it would not relinquish the entire contest.
The sixth inning gave the Terriers a seven-run cushion, highlighted by Dubay's three-run homer. Hudson drove in two runs on a double and Leath capped it off with an RBI double. BU rounded out its scoring in the sixth inning as sophomore Caitlin Rentler and junior Rachel Moeller had RBI hits.
Sophomore Kelley Engman improved to 3-2 in the pitcher's circle with four strikeouts.
The Terriers will match-up with Lehigh and St. Joseph's on Sunday (March 22) beginning at 11 a.m.
