March 26, 2009 | Softball
BOSTON - Senior Shayne Lotito went 6-for-7 from the batter's box and stole four bases, while sophomore April Setterlund drove in five runs, as the Boston University softball team (19-7) swept Rhode Island (6-16) on Thursday evening in the home opener at BU Softball Field. The Terriers took the first game by a 6-3 margin and won game two, 5-1.
Lotito went a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen bases, as she is now 18-for-18 this season, bringing her career total to 76 - good for second all-time. Setterlund hit .500 over the two games with one home run and two doubles, while senior Christy Leath went 2-for-3 with four walks. Leath, who is the school-record holder in career walks (97), now has a league-leading 19 this season.
The Terriers' pitching staff also came through as sophomore Kelley Engman and junior Megan Currier both threw complete-game efforts. Engman got the nod in game one and went the distance striking out six batters, giving up three runs on three hits and issuing three walks in her fifth win of the season. Currier gave up one run in seven innings of work, striking out two batters and walking just one as she improves to 6-2 this season.
In game one, Setterlund got things going for the Terriers as she rocketed a ball to center field for an RBI double. Just two at-bats later, BU loaded the bases after junior Rachel Hebert drew a walk, however, a line out to the pitcher ended the inning. In the top of the second, Engman found herself in a jam and the Rams took advantage of the situation, plating three runs with two outs.
In the fourth, the Terriers rallied for two runs on a double to center field by Setterlund and tacked on one more on the their second straight double, this time by senior Melissa Dubay. On the very next at-bat, Leath smacked her first home run of the season to complete the five-run fifth frame.
In the fifth, the Terriers again loaded the bases with senior Nora Militz up to bat, and she connected on a long strike, but the Rams' rightfielder made a nice play in the outfield to end the frame.
To start the second game, Lotito scored the first run after stealing second and third. In the top half of the next inning, the Rams knotted the score at one on an RBI single to center field. Lotito continued with her offensive tear in the third with an RBI triple to left field, and on the next at-bat Setterlund smacked one over the center field fence to put two more up on the scoreboard. Hebert drove in the final run of the game on a single to left field, a hit that would plate Leath.
BU will open its conference slate this weekend when it hosts Albany (13-7) on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m.
