ATLANTA, Ga. - The Boston University softball team (3-3) split its two games Friday afternoon on the first day of the Georgia Buzz Classic. The Terriers dropped a 5-4 decision to Kennesaw State before rebounding with a 4-1 triumph over Mercer.
Junior Erica Casacci had a great afternoon in the batter's box with four hits, one RBI and one stolen base, while red-shirt freshman Chelsea Kehr went 2-for-5 with one double, one home run and two RBIs. Senior Caitlin Rentler knocked in two runs on one double.
In the pitcher's circle, freshman Holli Floetker improved to 2-0 in a complete-game effort against Mercer. She struck out seven batters, issued two walks and allowed one run on one hit. Sophomore Whitney Tuthill was charged with the loss against Kennesaw State as she surrendered five runs - three earned - on 11 hits. She walked two batters and struck out four.
Against Kennesaw the Terriers were up by one run, 4-3, heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, however, the Owls rallied for two runs to take away the 5-4 victory. In that contest, Casacci went 2-for-4, while five other Terriers collected one hit. Rentler drove in two on a double in the third inning.
After giving up two runs in the first, BU took over the lead in the third inning as it pushed three runners across home plate on an RBI single and Rentler's two-run double to right field.
In the fourth, Kehr made it a 4-2 game with an RBI double to center field, however, the Owls drew to within one in the fifth. In the bottom of the seventh, they completed the comeback with a solo shot to left field followed by a two-out walk-off single to end the contest.
BU rebounded against Mercer as it defeated the Bears, 4-1. Casacci once again had a productive game with two hits and one RBI. The Terriers got on the board in the second inning as Kehr recorded a solo home run to center field. After Mercer put one up in the fifth, the Terriers exploded for three more runs on back-to-back RBI singles from Casacci and senior April Setterlund, and an unearned run off a throwing error. Floetker closed it down in the final two innings retiring all six batters.
The Terriers will take on Winthrop and Georgia Tech tomorrow at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
