
Softball Defeats Illinois, 8-1

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Boston University softball team concluded play at the NFCA Leadoff Classic with an 8-1 victory over Illinois Sunday in Clearwater, Fla. The Terriers are now 3-2 after their first tournament of the season.
Sophomore Holli Floetker picked up her third victory on the mound, pitching all seven innings for theTerriers. Flotker allowed just one run off of eight hits and struck out five batters.
Sophomore Brittany Clendenny and senior Melanie Delgado led BU with two hits each whole sophomore Megan Volpano drove in three runs.
The game was even at 0-0 until the fifth inning when BU got the scoring going. Clendenny began the frame with a double to left center before rookie Kendra Meadows stepped in a pinch runner. After Roesch got on base due to an error and was replaced by pinch runner Kayla Kruper, Illinois walked Mandy Fernandez and Melanie Delgado back-to-back. Meadows crossed the plate for BU’s first run then Erica Casacci stepped up and singled to right field driving in Kruper. Chelsea O'Connor drove in BU’s third run of the inning when she grounded out to third base.
The score remained 3-0 until the seventh inning, when BU sealed its victory with a five-run inning. Delgado started things off with a double to left field as Emily Felbaum stepped in to pinch run. Cassaci followed with a single to center field then Jayme Mask reached base on an error, as Felbaum advanced to third then crossed home due to the Illinois miscue.
Mask then swiped second base before O’Connor reached on a fielder’s choice. Volpano stepped up the plate and blasted a three-run double to left center field and Emily Roesch drove in the final run of the inning, as she flied out to center field.
Illinois managed to tally one run in the bottom of the seventh, ruining Floetker’s bid for a shutout, as the Fighting Illini mustered three hits and a run in the final inning.
BU returns to action next weekend when the Terriers travel to the University of Tennessee Tournament in Knoxville, Tenn. BU will play five games from Friday, March 2, to Sunday, March 4.
