CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Boston University softball team played an exhibition contest against the Dutch National Team on Sunday afternoon in Clearwater, Fla. The Dutch prevailed 3-2.
The Dutch National Team is currently on a United States tour and has been playing college teams at various tournaments this season. The Dutch were at the University of Tennessee Tournament, which BU participated in last weekend, and were also in Clearwater, Fla., this weekend for the Under Armour Showcase.
The team that hails from the Netherlands won the 2011 European National Championship and also participated in the 2010 World Championship play-offs. Four members of the team visiting the United States participated in the 2008 Olympics.
Junior Erin Schuppert was on the mound for the Terriers and allowed seven hits while striking out six batters. She allowed just one earned run in the contest.
The Dutch took a 1-0 lead in the third inning as they managed to score on a passed ball. The Terriers then took a 2-1 advantage in the fourth inning. Sophomores Jayme Mask and Megan Volpano each registered base hits. Classmate Amy Ekart grounded out but drove in a run as Mask crossed home while Brittany Clendenny drove in the second run to give BU a 2-1 lead.
The Dutch regained the lead in the sixth inning and went on to win, 3-2.
BU will remain in Clearwater, Fla., for the upcoming week and will play a trio of non-tournament games, starting with Fordham on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
