
Terriers Top Fordham, 4-3, in 10 Innings

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Boston University softball team won its fifth straight game with a 4-3 victory over Fordham in Clearwater, Fla., on Tuesday afternoon. The Terriers, who entered this week’s Mid-Major Softball Poll at No. 25, needed 10 innings to defeat the Rams and improve to 10-5 on the season.
Facing Fordham’s Jen Mineau, a 2010 First Team Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-American, the Terriers registered 12 hits during the affair. Sophomore Amy Ekart led the way, going 3-for-5 at the plate with 2 RBIs, including her second home run of the season. Sophomore Megan Volpano posted two hits while senior Melanie Delgado also had a pair of hits and drove in the game winning run.
Junior Whitney Tuthill (2-1) earned the win for the Terriers after entering a scoreless game in the fifth inning. Tuthill allowed just one hit and no earned runs for the remainder of the game. Sophomore Holli Floetker started the contest of the Terriers with the Rams earning a run and four hits while she was on the mound.
BU was the first to get on the board in the bottom of the second as Emily Roesch and Brittany Clendenny both walked. The bases became loaded when Delgado took first after being hit by a pitch. Sophomore Jayme Mask drove in the game’s first run with a single to left field as the Terriers took the 1-0 lead.
BU built on its advantage in the bottom of the fifth, as Ekart began the inning with a homer to left center field. Chelsea Kehr and Delgado followed with singles but Erica Casacci grounded out to third base to end the inning with two runners left on base.
Fordham evened the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs. The Rams started the frame with a pair of singles then loaded the bases after a player walked. A sacrifice fly drove in the first run while the tying run scored on an error in the infield.
With neither team able to generate offense in the seventh inning, the game extended to extra innings. After a scoreless eighth inning, Fordham took a 3-2 lead at the top of the ninth after a sacrifice fly. The Terriers were able to respond in the bottom half of the inning as Ekart drove in her second run of the game with a single to left field.
BU’s defense held in the top of the 10th as the Rams were held scoreless before Delgado provided the game winning run with a single to left field, driving in Clendenny and giving BU the 4-3 victory.
The Terriers return to action on Wednesday, as BU takes on Long Island at 11 a.m. in Clearwater, Fla.
