
Softball Sweeps at Day Two of The Game Tournament

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Boston University softball team swept both of its opponents during day two of The Game Tournament on Saturday in Clearwater, Fla. BU began the day with a 7-1 victory over Coastal Carolina then defeated ACC-member Maryland, 1-0, in the Terriers second game. BU improves to 13-8 on the season.
In a battle between two schools ranked in the Mid-Major Softball Poll, No. 25 BU defeated No. 21 Coastal Carolina to start the day. The Terriers accounted for a season-high seven doubles during the game with sophomores Chelsea O'Connor and Brittany Clendenny leading the way with two each. Classmates Megan Volpano and Amy Ekart along with rookie Emily Felbaum also hit doubles while Volpano and Ekart both drove in two runs.
Junior Erin Schuppert earned the win for the Terriers after pitching all seven innings and allowing only one earned run. Schuppert struck out five batters while holding the Chanticleers to just four hits.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when the Chanticleers scored their only run of the game with an RBI double to go up 1-0. BU responded in the top of the fourth inning with two runs. Volpano reached base on an error by the short stop then took second with another error occurring in right field. Ekart doubled down the left field line to drive in Volpano. Clendenny then notched a double to the opposite side of the outfield to drive in Ekart and put the Terriers up 2-1.
BU added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth with O'Connor's double to left field driving in Roesch, who had reached on a fielder's choice. Volpano's single to right field allowed O'Connor to score and the Terriers to take a 4-1 lead.
BU added to its advantage with a run in the top of the sixth. Clendenny swung for her second double of the game and Felbaum followed with a two-base hit to bring Clendenny home. After another scoreless frame by Coastal Carolina, BU tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh. O'Connor and Volpano hit back-to-back doubles with Volpano driving O'Connor home. Ekart gave BU its final run with a single up the middle, allowing Volpano to score and BU to claim the 7-1 victory.
In BU's second game of the day, the Terriers defeated Maryland, 1-0. Sophomore Holli Floetker earned the win for the Terriers after pitching a complete game shutout. Floetker struck out six batters and allowed just one hit, as her bid for her first no-hitter of the season was ruined in the fourth inning.
BU generated four hits on the day with O'Connor, Ekart, Chelsea Kehr and Melanie Delgado swinging the bats. Kehr drove in the Terriers lone run as Ekart scored for BU.
After a scoreless three innings, BU registered the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ekart swung for a two-out single to left field and then advanced to second a fielding error in the infield. Kehr then blasted the ball to right field, allowing Ekart to score what would be the winning run for BU.
The Terriers conclude play at The Game Tournament on Sunday morning against Northern Illinois. First pitch is schedule for 9 a.m.
