BOSTON - In a valiant effort, the Boston University women's tennis team defeated No. 18 Yale's top singles player and nationally-ranked doubles pair while taking three other singles contests to a third set before eventually falling, 6-1, on Thursday evening at the Track and Tennis Center. Winning two of three doubles matches and five of the six singles contests, the Bulldogs improve to 9-2, while the Terriers drop to 4-4.
Yale entered doubles action featuring three ranked duos but found itself in serious trouble for the first point of the day, as the Terriers top pair, sophomore Leonie-Charlotte Athanasiadis and junior Jessi Linero, stunned the 22nd nationally-ranked team of Vicky Brook and Hanna Yu, 8-5.
The Bulldogs won the second match with No. 24 Elizabeth Epstein/Annie Sullivan earning an 8-2 victory over senior Monika Mical and sophomore Kendal Drake.
In the third contest, senior Petra Santini and junior Vivien Laszloffy were paired together due to the injuries of two-time America East Player of the Year Stefanie Nunic and freshman Sami Lieb. Despite the inexperience of playing together, the women battled to a tiebreaker. No. 38 Blair Seideman/Stephanie Kent came out the victors though with a 9-8(6) win to give the Bulldogs the doubles point.
Rebounding from the difficult loss, Laszloffy earned a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Epstein at the top singles spot for BU's lone point of the day. Epstein was ranked as high as No. 92 in the fall and dropped to 8-3 on the season.
Athanasiadis, Linero and sophomore Amelia Martinez all went to a third set in their respective match, but the Bulldogs came out the winner in each one. Yu defeated Athanasiadis, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 2, while Kent pulled out a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Linero at No. 4. In the No. 5 slot, Brook pulled out a 6-1, 6-7(4), 10-8 win over Martinez.
The Terriers will next head to Charleston, S.C., for Spring Break and will first face Rutgers on Monday, March 12.
