Softball Inks Four Early Signees for 2015 Season

BOSTON - Four student-athletes have signed Letters of Intent to join the Boston University softball team for the 2015 season, second-year head coach Kathryn Gleason announced Friday afternoon. Lauren Catena, Caitlyn Callahan, Sydni Overly and Kaitlin Sahlinger make up the Class of 2018.
The group represents three different states and consists of two infielders, a catcher and a pitcher.
"We are very excited about the incoming recruiting class," Gleason said. "They all possess the talent, academic standards and integrity that define the BU Terrier softball program. We are looking forward to each of them beginning their careers and helping us compete for Patriot League Championships."

A two-time All-State infielder at Newark Academy ... Earned All-Prep First Team accolades her first three seasons ... Received All-State Non-Public Third Team accolades as a sophomore and followed with first team honors her junior year ... Named team captain for the upcoming season ... Named a Prep All-Star Team member in field hockey.
Coach Gleason: "Lauren comes to us with a lot of spunk and fire. She has had a tremendous high school career and we look for her to provide some added depth on the left side of the infield. Offensively, she is solid and possesses gap to gap power that will bolster our RBI production."

Caught for three-time All-State First Team honoree and current Arizona freshman pitcher Michelle Floyd at San Marino H.S. ... Started as an outfielder her freshman year ... Named best offensive player as a sophomore and the MVP her junior year after leading team to the Duarte Tournament title ... Received All-League First Team accolades this past season ... Received the San Marino H.S. Outstanding Community Service Award ... Also played soccer.
Coach Gleason: "Caitlyn is a lifelong BU fan, as she will be fulfilling her dream to compete as a Terrier. We are excited about her energy, her enthusiasm, and her ability to provide depth behind the plate as well as in the outfield. Like so many others, she is the consummate student athlete and will work tirelessly to push her teammates and uphold the traditions of BU championship softball."

A left-handed pitcher from North H.S. ... Joined the varsity team her sophomore season ... Earned All-CIF, All-Area and All-League MVP accolades as a junior ... Posted a 10-6 record with a 1.43 ERA with 74 strikeouts in 93 innings ... Tabbed the team captain for the upcoming season.
Coach Gleason: "Sydni will bring another left arm to the circle for our pitching staff. She has the ability to compliment our current battery and seems to be able to just find a way to make batters swing and miss. She is a competitor through and through and will be a great addition to our mound. Sydni's presence, poise and composure in tight situations will be a stabilizing force as we make our mark in the Patriot League."

Kaitlin Sahlinger (INF • 5-9 • Bellevue, Wash. • Newport H.S.)
An athletic infielder with multiple honors in softball, soccer and basketball at Newport H.S. ... Led team to the 4A division title this past season ... Received All-KingCo First Team accolades and All-Area Team honors ... Brother currently plays baseball at the University of Portland and mother played soccer at University of Washington ... Her grandfather signed with the Philadelphia Phillies and played professional baseball for two years.
Coach Gleason: "Kaitlin defines raw power and athleticism. She has the ability to anchor one of our corners and be a leader on the infield. Her bat will be a force in the Patriot League as she has already boasted an outstanding high school and travel ball career. We look to her to continue that excellence in a BU uniform both on the field and in the classroom."
