TAMPA, Fla. - Despite senior pitcher Whitney Tuthill allowing just three hits in six innings of work, the Boston University softball team dropped a 1-0 decision at South Florida on Wednesday night. A participant in the 2012 Women's College World Series, the Bulls improve to 17-10 and extend their win streak to 11 games with the one-run victory against the Terriers (6-10).
USF entered the contest averaging 5.5 runs during their win streak but could never get comfortable against Tuthill (4-6). The Terriers' offense though only managed to advance a runner to second once against Sara Nevins (7-4), who struck out eight batters.
The Bulls earned their lone run in the bottom of the second with Kenshyra Jackson hitting a lead-off single. Serving as the pinch runner, Ilaura Reeves moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on an RBI double by Lee Ann Spivey.
Tuthill finished with four strikeouts and two walks while keeping four Bulls away from home plate.
BU had one runner in scoring position in the third when sophomore Emily Felbaum replaced freshman Haley King at first on a fielder's choice and then moved to second on junior Jayme Mask's walk. However, there were two outs, and Nevins quickly got out of the jam by inducing a fly out to left.
Junior Megan Volpano recorded the other hit with a lead-off single in the fourth. Nevins earned the strikeout and a double-play ground out to prevent the Terriers from threatening to tie the game.
Coming off Tuesday's no-hitter against Maine, the Bulls' Lindsey Richardson recorded the final out with the bases empty for USF to earn her fourth save of the season.
The Terriers will conclude their spring break trip this weekend with the Clearwater Spring Invitational. BU will open the competition on Friday (March 15) against Maryland (4 p.m.) and Rutgers (6:15 p.m.).
