CLEARWATER, Fla. - Concluding a season-opening 21-game road trip, the Boston University softball team was edged by Robert Morris, 2-1, in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon at the Eddie C. Moore Complex. Dropping their third one-run defeat of the Clearwater Spring Invitational, the Terriers fall to 7-14, while the Colonials improve to 12-9.
Recording nine strikeouts against one walk in the complete-game performance, senior Whitney Tuthill (5-8) scattered five hits and allowed an unearned run in both the ninth and 10th innings, respectively. Tallying eight strikeouts for the Colonials, Geena Badolato (4-4) also allowed just five hits with BU scoring once in the ninth inning.
The Terriers had an opportunity to score first in the fourth inning when juniors Jayme Mask and Amy Ekart got into scoring position after back-to-back Robert Morris errors and a sacrifice bunt by junior Megan Volpano. On the next two at-bats though, Mask was tagged out at home on a fielder's choice and Badolato induced a grounder for the third out.
BU again had two runners on base in both the fifth and sixth innings, but a double play and consecutive ground outs ended the two threats.
The Colonials scored the first run in the ninth off an RBI single by Chelsea Siar. Robert Morris then loaded the bases with zero outs, but Tuthill prevented any more damage with a force out at home and back-to-back strikeouts.
The Terriers responded in the bottom of the inning with junior Brittany Clendenny driving home Ekart on a two-out RBI single. After forcing a 10th inning, Robert Morris quickly took the lead back with an RBI double by Lauren Hackett.
BU tried to find an equalizer in the bottom of the inning but after a fly out to right was used to move senior Emily Roesch to third, the Terriers struck out and hit a grounder to short to end the game.
They will next open the conference schedule at home on Saturday (March 23) in a double header against Albany. Action is slated to begin at 1 p.m. between the two co-preseason favorites.
