FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Senior Whitney Tuthill struck out a career-high 12 batters and the Boston University softball team collected 14 hits to earn an 8-0 victory at Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon. Extending their win streak to six games, the Terriers improve to 17-20-1, while the Pioneers drop to 20-23.
Claiming her third win of the week after strong performances at Bryant and Boston College, Tuthill (13-11) held Sacred Heart to just two hits over seven innings for her fourth shutout of the season and personal-best 16th complete game. She recorded the most strikeouts by an individual since Cassidi Hardy ('10) one-hit Albany with 12 strikeouts on May 13, 2010.
Tuthill was aided by a strong offensive performance that saw the Terriers finish with at least seven runs for the third straight game. Senior Emily Roesch had a role in four of them, going 2-of-4 at the plate with a two-RBI double and two runs scored. Both freshmen Haley King and Lauren Hynes tallied three hits apiece while plating one runner and reaching home plate once.
The Terriers got on the board quickly with junior Jayme Mask reaching first on an infield error, stealing second, advancing to third on a successful sacrifice bunt by Hynes and scoring on junior Megan Volpano's RBI grounder.
Sacred Heart had runners on the corners with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but Tuthill earned her second strikeout to get out of the jam.
BU added a second run in the third inning using three consecutive hits. Sophomore Emily Felbaum led off with a single to right and moved to second on Mask's bunt single. Hynes followed with a third single to plate Felbaum.
The two-run lead expanded to five in the fourth, as the Terriers tallied three runs off four hits with the help of a defensive error and wild pitch. They added three more in the seventh, highlighted by Roesch's two-RBI double and King's RBI triple.
Tuthill concluded her impressive pitching performance by striking out four straight Pioneers.
After a three-game road trip, the Terriers will begin a seven-game homestand on Tuesday (April 23) against America East foe Albany with the doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.
