BOSTON - Hosting its final three-game weekend series as a member of the America East, the Boston University softball team welcomes Maine to the BU Softball Field with a doubleheader set to begin on Saturday (April 27) at 1 p.m. The teams will meet again on Sunday (April 28) with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
Saturday's doubleheader will feature face painting, giveaways and free samples from Raising Canes. Sunday marks BU's regular season home finale, and the Terriers will honor their three seniors, Emily Roesch, Erin Schuppert and Whitney Tuthill in a ceremony prior to the game.
The Terriers (17-23-1, 5-6 America East) entered the week on a six-game win streak, highlighted by a three-game sweep over conference foe UMBC, but are now looking to snap a three-game losing streak. BU fell to league leader Albany at home on Wednesday by scores of 8-0 and 3-0 before being edged on Thursday by Bryant, 4-3.
Recently returning to the lineup from injury, junior Chelsea Kehr has been steady at the plate this week with four hits in eight at-bats, including a double and RBI single. Leading the Terriers in hitting at .383, junior Jayme Mask is 3-of-7 but has recorded three walks to earn a .600 on-base percentage over the last three games. She has also tallied three stolen bases to increase her season total to 32, only five shy of the school record owned by Shayne Lotito ('09).
In the power department, junior Amy Ekart leads the Terriers with four home runs and 19 RBIs, while junior Brittany Clendenny and freshman Lauren Hynes have a team-high eight doubles apiece with senior Emily Roesch close behind with seven. Entering her final home series as a Terrier, the 2012 America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year Roesch ranks second all-time at BU with 37 doubles and eighth in RBIs (94).
Ranking second all-time with 112 career appearances in the circle for the Terriers, senior Whitney Tuthill leads the team with a 13-12 record and 2.44 ERA. She has pitched 166.2 innings and struck out 125 batters while holding opponents to a personal-low .244 batting average. Freshman Lauren Hynes (3-6) has pitched two complete games this week and allowed five earned runs in 14 innings (2.50 ERA) while recording 10 strikeouts. Senior Erin Schuppert (1-5) has made 10 appearances and struck out 15 batters in 29.2 innings.
Coming off a 1-2 performance against Stony Brook, the Black Bears (7-34, 3-9 AE) are visiting Boston for the first time since dropping a 3-2 decision to the Terriers in the opening round of the 2012 America East Tournament, which BU went on to win. The Terriers swept the three regular season games last year by a combined score of 13-5, including a 2-1 12-inning thriller. Two years ago in Boston though, Maine rebounded from a 3-2 loss with a doubleheader sweep with scores of 8-2 and 6-1.
EmJ Fogel leads Maine in hitting at .284 with 40 hits, while Jean Stevens (.270) owns a team-high 12 home runs and 33 RBIs. In the circle, Hannah Hill (2-13) has recorded 11 complete games and has a 4.36 ERA. Alexis Bogdanovich (0-9) and Beth Spoehr (4-8) have ERAs of 3.45 and 3.83, respectively.
Following the series with Maine, the Terriers will conclude the 2012-13 season at Stony Brook with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 4, at 1 p.m. and single game on Sunday, May 5, at 12 p.m.
