STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Competing in its final doubleheader of the season, the Boston University softball team dropped a pair of one-run decisions at Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon. Scoring twice in the sixth inning of both contests to earn 2-1 and 5-4 victories, the Seawolves improve to 30-22 and 9-8 in the America East standings, as the Terriers (21-25, 8-8 AE) see their four-game win streak snapped.
Junior Jayme Mask led BU with a combined four hits and two stolen bases to match school record-holder Shayne Lotito ('09) with 37 swiped bags in a season. Junior Brittany Clendenny, junior Chelsea Kehr and sophomore Emily Felbaum tallied three hits apiece, while junior Amy Ekart and freshman Haley King both crushed a home run in the second game.
Freshman Lauren Hynes (5-7) opened the first contest with five scoreless innings before Stony Brook hit a two-RBI single up the middle to grab the lead for good. She allowed just three hits and finished with five strikeouts against one walk, while Allison Cukrov (11-13) posted 10 strikeouts against one walk and allowed five hits.
The Seawolves scored a combined three runs in the first two innings against senior Erin Schuppert (3-6) but would not reach home plate again until Melissa Phelan's two-run homer in the sixth. Schuppert finished with two strikeouts and allowed 10 hits.
BU put four runs on the board off six hits against Christine Lucido, who was replaced after 3.2 innings. Jane Sallen (8-7) went the next 2.1 innings and prevented the Terriers from scoring despite giving up five hits. Cukrov quickly retired the side in the seventh for her fourth save of the season.
In the first contest, the Terriers scored their lone run in the fifth with Clendenny hitting a single up the middle and scoring on Felbaum's double to left. Hynes lost the lead though in the sixth when she loaded the bases by hitting two batters and allowing a single, setting the stage for Bria Green's two-RBI drive up the middle.
Stony Brook carried the momentum to the second game, opening the contest with two runs off three hits and a defensive error. The Seawolves grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second behind a single, double and RBI grounder.
The Terriers began their comeback in the third, as Mask singled, stole second and scored on junior Megan Volpano's double to right center. In the next at-bat, Ekart blasted her team-leading fifth homer of the season over the left field wall to tie the game at 3-3.
With two outs in the fourth, King hit BU's second home run of the game to give the Terriers the lead. Felbaum and Mask followed with back-to-back singles but were stranded on second and first, respectively.
BU tried to add another run in the fifth, but Ekart was thrown out at home from left field, as she tried to score from second on Clendenny's single down the line with two outs. The Terriers came up empty handed again in the sixth with two runners in scoring position. Hynes hit a grounder toward short with two outs, and Felbaum was called for interference while moving from second to end the threat.
The Seawolves took advantage of the missed opportunities by hitting the two-run homer in the bottom of the inning to earn their second one-run victory of the day.
Banned from the America East tournament due to the upcoming move to the Patriot League, the defending conference champion Terriers will conclude the 2013 season on Sunday (May 5) in the rubber match of the weekend series at Stony Brook. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
