CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - After batting a league-high .399 and recording the fourth most stolen bases in conference history, Boston University softball junior outfielder Jayme Mask has been named America East Player of the Year, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon. Leading the conference in hits with 59 and owning a 3.35 GPA, Mask also earned her first career All-Conference First Team and All-Academic Team awards.
Four other Terriers joined her in receiving recognition from the conference. Junior shortstop Brittany Clendenny received her second All-AE First Team accolade, while junior third baseman Megan Volpano earned her third straight Second Team award. Freshman pitcher Lauren Hynes was placed on the All-Rookie squad and senior second baseman Emily Roesch received All-Academic Team honors.
Finishing with 37 stolen bases, Mask became BU's 10th AE Player of the Year with April Setterlund ('11) the last Terrier to be recognized. She led the league in on-base percentage (.464) and finished tied for third in runs scored (30). Named America East Player of the Week on April 15 and April 29, she batted a league-best .480 in conference play and reached base 51.9 percent of the time. She also contributed a personal-best 14 RBIs from the lead-off position.
Previously named to the All-Rookie Team as a freshman, Clendenny started all 48 games at shortstop and batted .260 with a team-high nine doubles. Hitting .333 in league play, she finished tied for second at BU with 20 RBIs and helped turn four double plays, as BU finished the regular season ranked 70th nationally with a .965 fielding percentage.
A key contributor on the offensive and defensive end, Volpano finished second on the team with 24 runs scored and fourth in batting average (.284). Starting all 48 games, she blasted three home runs and finished with 19 RBIs. She was also a perfect 4-of-4 in stolen base attempts.
Starting 48 games with appearances in the circle, at first base and in the outfield, Hynes demonstrated her athleticism by making key plays with her bat and arm. Posting a 5-8 record in 23 appearances with 16 starts, she went 3-3 in league play and recorded a 2.21 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 38 innings while limiting conference opponents to a .214 batting average. At the plate, she hit .240 and recorded eight doubles and 11 RBIs while reaching home plate 16 times.
Graduating cum laude from BU's College of Communication last May, Roesch returned for a fifth year and earned a 3.85 GPA in her public relations grad program. A former AE Rookie of the Year, she posted nine doubles with 20 RBIs and had a .959 fielding percentage while hitting .236.
