BOSTON - Boston College scored a run in three consecutive innings and allowed just one hit to defeat the Boston University softball team, 3-0, on Thursday afternoon at the BU Softball Field. Despite being limited to six hits, the Eagles improve to 20-16, while the Terriers fall to 19-16.
Sophomore Lauren Hynes (12-11) went the distance for BU for the eighth straight game and finished with two strikeouts against three walks, while the Eagles' Jordan Weed (7-6) struck out three Terriers and walked just one in the first inning.
Senior Jayme Mask led off in the bottom of the first with that walk and advanced to second on freshman Moriah Connolly's successful sacrifice bunt. Trying to score the first run, senior Brittany Clendenny followed with a single to the outfield, but Mask was thrown out at home by right fielder Taylor Coroneos.
The Eagles took the lead for good in the following inning. They loaded the bases with two singles and a hit-by-pitch. Hynes got the force out at home on a grounder to Clendenny at short, but Nicole D'Argento then drew a RBI walk.
BC added two more runs off a single in the third and sacrifice bunt in the fourth. Weed did not require the extra insurance though, as the Terriers were unable to get on base in their final 18 at-bats. BU put the ball in play with just two strikeouts but the Eagles' defense was in position for each putout.
BU will next resume the Patriot League schedule at in-state rival Holy Cross on Saturday (April 12). First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 12 p.m. with the third game of the weekend series set for Sunday (April 13) at 12 p.m.
