BOSTON - After being held to one hit in a 3-0 loss, the Boston University softball team rebounded with 10 hits during a 6-4 victory for the doubleheader split against Lehigh on Saturday afternoon. Hosting their first-ever Patriot League weekend series, the Terriers move to 18-14 and 3-2 in conference play, while the preseason favorite Mountain Hawks (17-11, 7-1 PL) see their 13-game win streak snapped.
Sophomore Lauren Hynes (11-10) went the distance in both contests for BU, allowing three runs off seven hits in the first game, followed by three earned runs off 10 hits in the second. During the win, she helped her cause by going 2-of-3 and playing a role in two runs with a RBI single and run scored. Six other Terriers tallied at least one hit, highlighted by a key two-RBI double down the left field line in the fifth by senior Amy Ekart.
Named preseason Patriot League Pitcher of the Year, Emily Bausher (4-5) led Lehigh to victory by striking out seven Terriers against one walk and allowing just one hit. Senior Brittany Clendenny broke up the no-hit bid with a hard single past the diving hortstop Emma Capetz in the sixth. Ashley Quigley (6-3) earned five strikeouts but was plagued by four walks, as she finished with six runs allowed off 10 hits for the loss.
The Mountain Hawks broke a scoreless deadlock in the fourth inning of the first game with three runs off four hits. Cassie Waggy singled through the left side to plate pinch runner Lizzy Odren from third. With the bases loaded and two outs, MacKenzie Velasquez singled to right field to extend the lead to 3-0.
Despite Bausher only giving up one hit, the Terriers sill had their chances. Hynes reached first on a catcher's interference and then moved to second on an error by the shortstop during Ekart's at-bat. Freshman Moriah Connolly followed with a one-out walk to load the bases. Lehigh got out of the jam by inducing two infield ground outs.
The Mountain Hawks loaded the bases to open the second game behind two singles and a BU defensive error. Hynes got the first out on a short pop up to center, but Jessica Calvini hit a slow infield dribbler to plate the first run. Waggy followed with a single up the middle for the 2-0 advantage. With the bases still loaded, Hynes prevented any more damaage by getting back-to-back ground outs. On the second out from second, junior Emily Felbaum picked up the grounder and threw a quick strike to Ekart at home.
The Terriers cut the deficit in half behind back-to-back doubles by senior Chelsea Kehr and Hynes. Neither team would score again until BU took its first lead of the day in the fifth inning.
Leading off, Clendenny reached third after skying the ball and watching the center fielder drop it. Lehigh got two more outs and then intentionally walked Hynes to put runners at the corners. Junior Mandy Fernandez singled to left field to tie the game and then later reached home plate alongside Hynes on Ekart's double.
Lehigh tried to battle back in the sixth, by loading the pases off two hits and a walk with one out. Kehr picked up a slow grounder and threw it to home for the force out. On the next at-bat, the shortstop Clendenny collected the ball and got the third out at first to maintain BU's 3-2 lead.
In the bottom half, Clendenny reached on a fielder's choice following Younan's walk. She took second on a passed ball and then scored on senior Jayme Mask's single up the middle. Kehr followed with a RBI double to left center to push the Terriers ahead, 6-2.
Calvini tried to mount a rally with a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the seventh. Waggy was hit by a pitch to bring the game-tying run to the plate. Emma Capetz though flew out to center to end the game.
The Terriers and Mountain Hawks will next conclude the weekend in the rubber match on Sunday (April 6) at 12 p.m.
