The No. 5/4 Boston University men's ice hockey team kicks off a weekend home-and-home series with Connecticut on Friday (Nov. 18) with a visit to the XL Center in Hartford. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
A win or tie on Friday would allow the Terriers to go undefeated in their first three Hockey East contests for just the second time since 2002 (2010-11). BU and UConn will close out their series on Saturday (Nov. 19) at Agganis Arena at 7 p.m.
The Terriers and Huskies have just five prior meetings and BU is 3-1-1 in them. The teams split their league series last season with BU earning a 4-2 home win before suffering a 5-2 loss in Hartford three days later. During the 2014-15 season, the teams skated to a 4-4 draw at Agganis Arena before the Terriers posted a 5-2 road victory two weeks later. In the first-ever tilt between the two schools on Nov. 17, 2013, BU posted a 4-1 home win.
Connecticut is coming off a weekend series at Ohio State, skating to a 3-3 draw on Saturday after a 7-4 loss in the opener. The Huskies opened the season with a two-game home sweep of Alabama Huntsville on Oct. 7-8 but their only other win in the nine games since came at Notre Dame in their Hockey East opener on Oct. 27. Five of those nine contests resulted in ties.
Sophomore Tage Thompson leads the team in both points (14) and goals (7) while classmate Maxim Letunov has 11 points on four goals and seven assists. Senior Evan Richardson has added 10 points (4g, 6a).
Senior Rob Nichols and freshman Adam Huska have split starts in goal this season and Nichols holds the edge in goals-against average (2.40 - 3.11) while Huska is just ahead in save percentage (.916 - .915).
The Terriers are led in scoring by reigning Hockey East Rookie of the Week Patrick Harper, who has 14 points on five goals and nine assists. Eleven (5g, 6a) of sophomore Jordan Greenway's 12 points have come in the past six games and he is tied for the nation lead in game-winning goals with three.
Sophomore Charlie McAvoy has at least one assist in seven of BU's nine games thus far this season and is one of 14 defensemen across the country averaging at least one point per game. McAvoy (1g, 8a), classmate Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson (2g, 7a) and freshman Clayton Keller (5g, 4a) each have nine points thus far this season.
Freshman Jake Oettinger has been in goal for all nine game and currently sports a 1.79 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage. Junior Connor LaCouvee is expected to earn his first start of the season on Friday.
