BOSTON - Participating in their second match of the weekend, Boston University women's tennis senior Johanna Hyoty and freshman Sabrina Faybyshev teamed for a thrilling 7-6 upset victory over the nation's seventh-best duo on Sunday afternoon at the Boston Athletic Club.
No. 42 Dartmouth ultimately pulled out a 7-0 sweep to improve to 4-2, but the Terriers (3-2) battled throughout against their first ranked opponent of the season after dropping a hard-fought 4-3 decision to Yale on Saturday. They first upset Taylor Ng & Kristina Mathis in doubles and then sent three of six singles matches to a third set.
Named the Patriot League's top player the last two weeks, Hyoty defeated a ranked opponent for the first time since topping Boston College's then-No. 61 Jessica Wacnik in singles action last season, while Faybyshev earned her first-ever win.
They became the first Terrier duo since Stefanie Nunic ('12) and Vivien Laszloffy ('13) in 2011 to beat the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast region's top doubles team. That same year, Nunic and Laszloffy upset the 18th-ranked duo from Akron and would eventually earn their own ranking in the ITA doubles poll.
Despite the loss at the No. 1 slot, Dartmouth still managed to claim the doubles point by a combined score of 12-5 at lines 2 and 3.
Hyoty was one of three Terriers to force a third set in singles, as the two-time PL Player of the Year tried to mount a rally against reigning Ivy League Player of the Year Taylor Ng. After the doubles loss to Hyoty, Ng won the first set and bounced back from dropping the second set to prevail 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
Faybyshev also tried to rally from a set down at line 4 before eventually falling, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to Jacqueline Crawford. Sophomore Iryna Kostirko was the third Terrier to come up just short at line 3 to Mathis, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4.
Facing its third straight Ivy League opponent, BU will next visit No. 72 Harvard on Friday (Feb. 19) at 4 p.m.
