NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Facing its first of four scheduled Ivy League opponents, the Boston University women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision at Yale on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (1-5) won the all-important doubles point with a sweep and then claimed three singles points, including the final one in a three-set thriller, to stave off a Terrier rally. BU (3-1) suffered its first loss of the dual season but still came away with its most points in a match against Yale since a 4-3 win in 2008.
Yale jumped out a 1-0 lead by winning the three doubles contests by a combined score of 19-12. The Terriers had their chances, but the Bulldogs won the tiebreaker at line 3 for the 7-6(2) victory against senior Kim McCallum and freshman Remi Ramos. Sophomore Iryna Kostirko and junior Barbara Rodriguez also came up just short at No. 2 in a hard-fought 6-4 decision.
Five of the six singles matches were decided in straight sets. Rodriguez dropped the fewest singles games in a dominating 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 6. Senior Lauren Davis posted a 7-5, 7-1 win in the No. 2 slot.
Two-time PL Player of the Week Johanna Hyoty arguably had her best performance of the year so far, as she rolled to a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 against 2015 All-Ivy League honoree and 2013 Ivy Rookie of the Year Madeleine Hamilton.
Yale pulled out wins at line 3 against Kostirko (6-4, 6-4) and 5 against Ramos (6-2, 6-2) to put the score at 3-3.
Freshman Sabrina Faybyshev won the first set at No. 4, but was broken at the end of the second set and eventually fell to Caroline Amos, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.
The Terriers will next face No. 42 Dartmouth on Sunday (Feb. 14) at 1 p.m. at the Boston Athletic Club.
