RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Eight Terriers contributed at least one RBI and senior Lauren Hynes allowed just one run in 10.1 innings to help the Boston University softball team claim a doubleheader sweep over UC Riverside (4-1) and Southern Utah (5-0) Friday afternoon.
Highlighted by four doubles and a triple, the Terriers (6-11) finished with an 18-5 advantage in hits to win their first-ever meeting with the Thunderbirds (3-20) and snap the host Highlanders' (18-7) 11-game win streak.
Junior Brittany Younan went a combined 4-of-6 with an RBI and run scored, while sophomore Kaitlin Sahlinger tallied a team-high two RBIs and two runs scored in the doubleheader. Hynes (5-5) tallied seven strikeouts and limited both opponents to a combined .147 batting average.
In the first game against SUU, the Terriers jumped out ahead in the second inning on an RBI double by freshman Alex Heinen. Scoring the first run, Sahlinger hit a RBI groundout in the third and was followed by Hynes' RBI double for the 3-0 advantage.
Sophomore Emma Wong plated classmate Jilee Schanda, and junior Moriah Connolly drove home Younan to extend the lead to 5-0 through four innings. SUU tried to mount a rally in the sixth by earning two walks against Hynes, but junior Makinna Akers immediately induced a double play in relief to end the threat and help seal the victory.
Entering the second game with a 12-1 home record, the Highlanders quickly grabbed a 1-0 lead. Melanie Richard put UCR ahead in the first by getting hit by a pitch, stealing second, advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt and scoring on an illegal pitch by Hynes.
Junior Gabi Martinez stepped up in the second inning for the Terriers by first hitting a two-out RBI double to tie the game. The catcher then picked off a runner at first to help keep UCR away from putting a runner in scoring position.
Sahlinger, Younan and freshman Emily Morrow all had an RBI hit during the following three innings to give BU the 4-1 advantage. In the bottom of the fifth, UCR had a single and walk to put two runners on with one out, but Hynes got two fly outs.
The Terriers had the opportunity to extend their lead in the sixth with a Hynes single and Martinez walk with zero outs, but the game was called due to rain. Due to the game reaching the required five innings, the contest was called with BU prevailing.
BU will conclude the Mizuno Invitational and its spring break trip in California on Saturday against Yale at 12:30 p.m. ET and Southern Utah at 5 p.m. ET.
