BOSTON - Looking to rebound from its first loss of the season, the No. 9 Boston University field hockey team (7-1) returns home to take on No. 3 Connecticut (8-0) on Sunday (Sept. 25). The game at New Balance Field is set for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network.
After winning their first seven games for the best start in program history, the Terriers suffered their first blemish of 2016 in a road Patriot League contest against Lafayette on Friday. In a game that was decided by a shootout, the Leopards earned a 2-1 victory.
UConn improved to 8-0 with a 6-0 home win over Temple on Friday and joins Duke as the only two remaining undefeated teams in Division I field hockey. The Huskies have recorded shutouts in three of their past four games, including an impressive 8-0 triumph at Virginia.
Sunday marks the annual tilt between the New England rivals. BU's most recent win against the Huskies came in 2008 but the last meeting at New Balance Field two seasons ago was tied 1-1 after two overtimes before UConn emerged victorious in the shootout. Last year in Storrs, the Terriers dropped a 5-0 contest.
UConn junior Charlotte Veitner, who had a hat trick in Friday's win, is one of the top scorers in the nation with 28 points on 11 goals and six assists. Sophomore Amanda Collins has 19 points, including a team-best seven assists and junior Casey Umstead (6g, 3a) and senior Anna Middendorf (6g, 2a) have added 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Two of the nation's top goals-against averages will be on display in the cages on Sunday as UConn redshirt junior Nina Klein boasts a 0.88, good for third, and BU senior Cammy Jensen is right behind with a 0.98, which ranks fifth. Jensen also has an impressive .765 save percentage while Klein checks in with a .562.
The Terriers continue to be paced by a balanced scoring attack as five players have four or more goals and three others have at least two. Senior Amanda Cassera has team highs in goals (5) and points (12) and classmate Taylor Blood is right behind with 11 points on four goals and three assists. Sophomore Ally Hammel (4g, 2a) and senior Hester van der Laan (4g, 1a) have contributed 10 and nine points, respectively.
