October 20, 2017 | Women's Tennis
PHILADELPHIA - Highlighted by freshman Emily Kim's two singles wins, the Boston University women's tennis team competed over two days at the ITA Regional Championships hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.
Kim opened with a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win against Providence's Risa Takenaka and then rallied from a set down to force a third against Columbia's No. 17-32 seed Christy Wan, who had to retire due to injury. Seeking a second upset victory, she battled UConn's No.9-16 seed Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva but came up just short, 6-4, 6-4.
Junior Sabrina Faybyshev opened in the main draw's opening with a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Hofstra's Alejandra Ruffini but bounced back by finishing her tournament with a 6-2, 6-2 consolation victory over Wagner's Vedika Anand.
Senior Iryna Kostirko received a first-round bye but was unable to join Kim in the Round of 32, as she fell short to Buffalo's Lolade Ogungbesan, a Pitt transfer, in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
In the opening round of doubles action, Faybyshev and Kostirko dropped an 8-3 decision to Boston College.
The Terriers will next conclude the fall slate at the Harvard Invitational on Nov. 3-5.
