
No. 20 Field Hockey Falls Short to No. 1 UConn in NCAA First Round, 3-1

STORRS, Conn. - The No. 20 Boston University field hockey team put forth a strong effort against top-ranked UConn but ultimately fell short to the Huskies by a score of 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in an NCAA First Round contest at the Sherman Family Complex.
The Terriers, who made their 13th appearance in the NCAA tournament, end their season with a record of 14-8 while the Huskies move to 20-0 and advance to Sunday's second-round game.
How It Happened
- UConn opened the scoring just 2:54 into the contest before freshman Ailsa Connolly notched an equalizer at the 7-minute mark.
- The Huskies regained the lead with 7:21 remaining in the opening half before adding another in the 48th minute to create the 3-1 final.
- Charlotte Veitner, the nation's leading scorer, scored two goals for the Huskies and got things started when she redirected an offering by Svea Boker to the back of the net in the third minute of play.
- BU's goal came in transition as the Terriers attacked from the right side before getting into the UConn circle, where junior Kara Enoch beat a Husky defender to knock the ball over to Connolly, who quickly created space before drilling a reverse-stick shot to the boards exactly seven minutes into the contest.
- A bouncing shot from the top left of the circle by UConn's Amanda Collins found its way inside the near post through traffic to give the Huskies the lead back at 2-1.
- Veitner added an insurance goal with 22:09 left in regulation from above the right post when she redirected a high ball to the net.
Game Notes
- BU held UConn to just four corners.
- The Huskies had a 14-3 shot advantage for the game.
- Freshman goalkeeper Millie Baker saved four of the six shots on goal she faced in the opening half before junior Kathleen Keegan took over at halftime and made two stops while allowing one goal.
- UConn was awarded a penalty stroke in the 68th minute but Casey Umstead's attempt was wide right.
- Connolly finishes her rookie year with team highs in both points (22) and goals (11).
Season In Review
- BU went a perfect 6-0 in Patriot League play to clinch the regular-season title for the third straight year.
- In the Patriot League title game, BU scored two goals in the final 17 minutes to earn a 2-1, come-from-behind win over Bucknell and claim their 11th conference tournament title.
- The Terriers collected their sixth NCAA tournament win on Wednesday against Fairfield in the opening round.
- BU's senior class of Jordyn Beesmer, Allie Renzi and co-captains Grace Boston and Kali Shumock collected 55 wins, three Patriot League titles and three NCAA tournament appearances over the past four seasons.
