Shutout Win Over the Toreros Highlights Day Two Split at San Diego Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Continuing its participation at the San Diego Classic, the Boston University softball team claimed a 3-0 shutout win over the host Toreros after a 9-0 loss to BYU on Saturday afternoon. Senior Makinna Akers and junior Sydni Overly held San Diego to a combined six hits with the help of five strikeouts to snap a three-game losing streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Terriers had their best opportunity to grab the lead in the bottom of the second when sophomore Alexa Ponce and junior Emma Wong both had singles, but BYU got an infield pop up and strikeout to end the threat.
- A participant in last year's NCAA tournament, the Cougars finally got to freshman Lizzie Annerino in the third by taking advantage of three walks with a single and grand slam for the 5-0 lead.
- BYU added an RBI double in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth.
- Sophomore Alex Heinen had a two-out double in the bottom half, but BU was unable to avoid the run-rule effect in a shutout loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- San Diego had multiple opportunities to score first, including the second with a double, walk and two-out single, but junior Sydni Overly ended the threat with one of her four strikeouts.
- After Overly allowed a lead-off single and walk to open the third, senior Makinna Akers came in relief and recorded three straight outs on an infield grounder, fly out and liner to second.
- Facing a scoreless game entering the sixth, senior Moriah Connolly led off with a single and then stole second before reaching home on sophomore Alexa Ponce's two-out RBI single.
- Sophomore Emily Morrow and junior Kaitlin Sahlinger delivered two more two-out singles to extend the lead to 3-0.
- Following a one-out single in the fifth, Akers retired the final eight Toreros to help BU earn its second shutout of the season.
- The defending Patriot League champion Terriers will conclude the San Diego Classic on Sunday (March 5) at 12 p.m. ET against reigning MAC champion Miami (Ohio).
- San Diego State will serve as host of the matchup featuring two 2016 NCAA participants.
