CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – A day after earning All-Patriot League First Team honors, senior Moriah Connolly, senior Gabi Martinez and junior Jilee Schanda were recognized for their academic achievements with All-Academic Team accolades, the conference announced Wednesday afternoon.
The announcement marks the first time in program history that three Terriers were honored by a conference since the award first became available in the America East in 2006. BU joined the Patriot League in the summer of 2013.
Connolly and Martinez were both named to the Academic All-Patriot League squad for the third consecutive season, while Schanda collected her first award.
Majoring in business administration and management with a 3.45 GPA, Connolly hit .335 in the lead-off position and swiped a school-record 38 bases, one shy of the PL mark. The Dunedin, Florida, native moved to the shortstop position following three years in the outfield and currently leads the PL with 55 hits and 45 runs scored, 10 more than the nearest player.
In her final year, Martinez is hitting a personal-best .322 while collecting 31 RBIs, 30 runs scored, 11 doubles and five homers. Showing her versatility, the Weston, Florida, native has played 16 games so far at catcher, 14 in the outfield, 11 at third and 18 in the DP role. She owns a 3.52 GPA while majoring in human physiology.
A native of Fresno, California, the 2017 PL Player of the Year Schanda currently sits fourth overall in the PL with a .353 batting average and leads the way in conference play hitting a stellar .436. The outfielder ranks second in hits (53), fourth in slugging percentage (.513) and tied-for-fourth in runs scored (31) while adding four homers. She is currently in the School of Hospitality Administration with a 3.52 GPA.
The Terrier trio and the rest of their teammates will open their PL title defense as the No. 2 seed on Thursday against No. 3 Army West Point with first pitch slated for 2:30 p.m.
