BOSTON – Competing in the first home match of the dual season, the four-time defending Patriot League champion Boston University women's tennis team will host Big South member Liberty on Sunday morning with doubles action slated to begin at 10 a.m.
The Terriers (0-1) are coming off a hard-fought 5-2 loss at Dartmouth in which they claimed at least one point against the Big Green for the first time since 2014. Two members of the freshman class (Katya Martens, Lily Burchell) ranked No. 10 in the 2017 TennisRecruiting.net Mid-Major Poll each claimed a singles point. Fellow classmate Emily Kim almost added a third but came up just short in a super tiebreaker. Senior Iryna Kostirko also put up a valiant effort against No. 78 Kristina Mathis.BU also features junior and reigning Patriot League Player of the Year Remi Ramos, who led the Terriers with 18 singles wins last season.
The Terriers have claimed an 18-1 record at the Track and Tennis Center since joining the Patriot League in the summer of 2013. Last season, the Terriers went 4-0 with a 4-3 victory over Rhode Island and 7-0 sweeps against Holy Cross, Bryant and Binghamton en route to the NCAAs.
Liberty will make the trek to BU after dropping a tough 4-3 decision at Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon. The Flames went 12-12 last season and reached the semifinals of the Big South tournament.
The Terriers won the last meeting between the two schools, 4-3, during their 2016 Spring Break trip in California. With the final point up for grabs, junior Sabrina Faybyshev dropped the first set and was facing a 5-1 deficit in the second before rallying for a thrilling 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory.
