August 22, 2018 | Softball
They are three of 12 returning Terriers from a squad that claimed the third most wins in program history (39), earned the program's third Patriot League title in five years and upset top-ranked Oklahoma during the regular season. They will be joined on campus by eight newcomers in September.
"I am excited about the work ethic and leadership from these three young student-athletes," said Waters. "They have grown individually each year and possess the qualities necessary to lead this program towards future success. I have great confidence they will continue to build our championship culture, strive for greatness academically and be wonderful people in the BU community."
The defending Patriot League champion Terriers will feature three captains for the second consecutive season with Heinen retaining her captaincy. The San Clemente, California, native caught every pitch in 59 games behind home plate while batting a team-high .355 to help BU capture both the PL regular season and tournament crowns. Her 71 hits ranked tied-for-fourth all-time at BU, tied-for-seventh most ever in the PL and No. 58 in the NCAA this past spring. A three-time All-Conference honoree, she also recorded 50 RBIs, second most in PL history and No. 3 in BU history.
A fellow California native (San Pedro), Ponce made 55 starts with appearances in the outfield, infield and at the designated player slot. She finished fourth on the team with 31 RBIs and contributed five multi-hit games and six-multi RBI performances. The 2017 All-PL member hit three homers and later tallied an RBI in PL tourney wins vs. Army West Point and Lehigh.
Annerino appeared in a personal-best 21 games this past year in the circle with six starts. Highlighted by her 4.2 scoreless innings in relief in the 4-3 win over then-No. 1 Oklahoma, she posted a 3-3 record and 2.70 ERA. She later pitched four scoreless innings against Oregon State and tossed a shutout in a 7-0 win over Providence.
Besides being successful on the field, all three Terriers have been named to the PL's Academic Honor Roll at least two times apiece for posting a GPA above 3.20.
BU will open fall ball on Saturday, Sept. 15 with an 11:30 a.m. start against Rhode Island and 3:30 p.m. first pitch against Southern New Hampshire.
