WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sophomore Petra Hall scored 6:25 into overtime to give the No. 21 Boston University field hockey team a 2-1 victory at American in its Patriot League opener on Saturday afternoon at the Jacobs Complex.
After a first-half goal by sophomore Miya Denison, the Terriers had a 1-0 lead until the late stages of regulation, when the Eagles finally solved the BU defense to send the game to overtime.
BU moves to 5-2 on the year while the Eagles fall to 3-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU scored on the first corner of the game as senior Ally Hammel found Denison for a redirect five yards above the right post at the 15-minute mark.
- The Terriers had chances to build on their lead before halftime but settled for a 1-0 lead at the break.
- American had the majority of the scoring opportunities in the latter half and finally broke through with 2:37 left in regulation.
- On their seventh corner of the contest, the Eagles got an equalizer when Jette Dieckmann took a pass from Annaka Groschinski and snuck it under BU netminder Kathleen Keegan.
- American earned another corner in the waning seconds of regulation but could not convert and the game went to overtime.
- After unsuccessful shots on both ends of the field in overtime, including a BU corner, freshman Casey Thompson entered the game and set up the game-winning goal in transition.
- The rookie dribbled from the midfield into the Eagles' circle before passing off to Hall, who moved towards the left side before elevating a reverse-stick shot from a tough angle just past the reach of American goalkeeper Maura Jacobs.
