Terriers Win 5-4 Thriller at Holy Cross to Keep Postseason Hopes Alive

WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman Jodie Conolly capped her first collegiate hat trick by scoring the game-winner with 5:17 remaining, lifting the Terriers to a thrilling 5-4 road win over Holy Cross on Saturday at Hart Turf Field.

Conolly and junior Ailsa Connolly accounted for all the scoring as BU erased deficits of 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3 to pull off the come-from-behind victory and move to 5-10 overall and 2-3 in Patriot League play.

BU and Holy Cross are now tied for the fourth and final tournament spot in the PL standings but the Terriers now hold the tiebreaker thanks to today's win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers scored the first goal of the game but it would be their only lead the final minutes of regulation.
  • Conolly opened the scoring on BU's first corner of the contest at 5:05 with an assist from junior Kathryn Scheerer.
  • That was the lone goal of the opening quarter but the Crusaders tied up the game in the early moments of the second with a strong individual effort by Sinead Walsh.
  • Holy Cross took its first lead with 2:39 remaining in the first half on a goal by Lexi Tilton.
  • Down 2-1 entering the latter half, BU drew even when Connolly redirected a Casey Thompson pass to the boards off a corner in the 33rd minute.
  • Minka Koomen gave the home team another lead in the 38th minute, sending home a pass by Philomena Fitzgerald to make it a 3-2 contest.
  • The back-and-forth affair continued when Conolly secured her first multi-goal game as a Terrier with another corner tally at 43:44.
  • Less than a minute later, the Crusaders scored their third goal of the quarter - this one coming from Madeline Alderfer - to take a 4-3 edge entering the fourth.
  • The fourth quarter belonged to the Terriers as they earned six corners while allowing zero while completing the comeback victory.
  • Connolly found the back of the cage from the top of the circle for her team-leading eighth goal of the year, knotting up the contest with 12:31 left in regulation in the process.
  • The rookie from South Africa provided the late dramatics, converting on yet another corner to complete her hat trick and secure the Terriers' most important win of the season.
GAME NOTES
  • Conolly was named the Turnpike Trophy MVP for her performance.
  • A win by the Terriers at Lehigh next weekend in the regular-season finale guarantees them a spot in the Patriot League tournament.
  • Each team recorded 18 shots in the game with the Terriers holding an 11-9 edge in shots on goal.
  • BU doubled up Holy Cross in corners, 10-5.
  • Freshman Caroline Kelly made four saves in goal for the Terriers in three quarters of work before senior Livy Golini stopped the only shot she faced in the fourth quarter to pick up the win.
