PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Alexa Ponce collected a pair of two-RBI extra-base hits and freshman Emily Gant tallied four strikeouts to lead the Boston University softball team to a 6-0 win at Brown on Wednesday afternoon.
The Terriers (33-17) finished with an 11-1 advantage in hits to extend their win streak to 13 games, fifth longest in program history, as the Bears fell to 11-25.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Terriers (33-17) finished with an 11-1 advantage in hits to extend their win streak to 13 games, fifth longest in program history, as the Bears fell to 11-25.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior Alex Heinen followed classmate Emily Morrow's one-out walk with a single down the right field line to put runners at the corners.
- After Heinen advanced to second on a ground out, Ponce delivered a two-RBI double to left to give BU the lead for good.
- Gant momentarily got into trouble in the bottom of the first with back-to-back two-out walks before senior Madi Killebrew collected a slow grounder and touched second for the force out.
- Heinen led off the top of the third with a single up the middle and reached home plate on Ponce's two-run blast to left that doubled the lead to 4-0.
- The Bears had their last best chance to rally in the bottom half with two more walks but again were unable to get the ball out of the infield.
- Killebrew singled to right to plate freshman Aliyah Huerta-Leipner in the fourth, and Heinen added an RBI single in the sixth for the final two runs of the game.
- Brown avoided the no-hitter in the bottom of the sixth with Lotz hitting a two-out double to right.
- Sophomore Ali DuBois relieved Gant in the seventh and earned a strikeout to seal the shutout.
- BU's 13-game win streak is the longest since the Terriers won 15 straight last season from April 8-April 29, and the longest streak is currently 18 in 2001 (April 4-April 22).
- Gant and DuBois earned their second combined shutout together and collected BU's 14th overall this season, matching last year's total.
- Ponce earned her second homer of the season and her fifth overall.
- Ponce owns a personal-best 40 hits and eight doubles this season.
- Brown became the third opponent this season to be limited one hit this year after Rider and Colgate were held to one hit apiece in five-inning losses.
- The Terriers improved to 17-1-1 against Brown since 1993 and are now 17-11-1 all-time in a series dating back to 1988.
- The Terriers will conclude the regular season at Bucknell in a three-game series that will determine the host for the Patriot League tournament.
- BU currently sits at 14-1 in the conference standings, while the Bison are 13-2.
- All three games are scheduled to be streamed on the Patriot League Network.
